Yali Dancig-Perlman

Executive Director, MarinChess Foundation

Yali Dancig-Perlman was raised in San Francisco and began playing chess at a young age, quickly growing into a serious tournament competitor. He went on to win the CalChess State Championship and earn strong results in regional competitions across California. For more than a decade, Yali has taught chess to children and adults through private lessons, group classes, after-school programs, and camps. His teaching is rooted in the belief that chess can build confidence, focus, patience, and creative problem-solving far beyond the board.

As president of his school chess club, he helped create a welcoming community where students could learn, compete, and share their love of the game. As Executive Director of MarinChess Foundation, Yali is focused on expanding access to high-quality chess education for students in schools across the Bay Area and beyond. Through One World Chess, a separate international initiative of MarinChess Foundation, he hopes to bring that same opportunity to children around the world, using chess to help them build confidence, purpose, and belief in their own potential.

Outside of chess, Yali is a varsity Cross Country and Track athlete, enjoys playing basketball, and loves spending time with his family.

Develop Strategic Thinking

As students progress, they'll learn advanced strategies and tactics that sharpen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our instructors guide them through challenging exercises and real-game scenarios, helping them to think several moves ahead.

In the final stage, students refine their skills and compete in friendly matches, applying everything they've learned. We emphasize sportsmanship, confidence, and the joy of mastering the game, preparing them for both the classroom and beyond.

After-School Chess FAQ

How long do these after-school programs last?

Our after-school programs are carefully tailored to meet the specific needs of each school, offering a high degree of flexibility to accommodate various schedules and requirements. We understand that every school has unique demands, which is why we are able to provide programs that can range anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks in duration.

How many students can your program accommodate?

Our program can accommodate a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 20 students per class. On average, we typically work with 10-12 students, which allows us to provide personalized attention while maintaining an engaging group dynamic. This range ensures that we can effectively meet the needs of different schools and class sizes.

How much do these after-school programs cost?

Our after-school programs are completely free for students and participating schools.
